BRIEF
Brother Industries, an electronics conglomerate with a century-long legacy, has consistently led the way in innovation. Rooted in sewing machines, they rapidly gained market prominence with high-quality yet affordable products. Operating in over 40 nations, Brother is renowned for its diverse technological offerings, from versatile printers to heavy-duty machinery and advanced labelling systems.
As a long-term partner, Brother approached us to create a promotional video highlighting the synergy and connectivity between their machine ranges. The video needed to appeal to small business owners and inspire them with the potential for growth and diversification within their businesses. We had two machines to showcase for this video, the ScanNCut SDX1250 and the PR1055x embroidery machine, alongside Brother’s Artspira app.

PRE-PRODUCTION
In pre-production, we embraced Brother's core concept: two businesses uniting for mutual benefit. Selecting businesses that would showcase the ScanNCut SDX1250 and the PR1055x embroidery machine's capabilities was crucial. Detailed storyboards and a narrative arc graph mapped the video's rhythm and excitement. We aimed to convey values of unity, teamwork, ambitious thinking, and the complementary merger of contrasting elements. The Brother machines, the true heroes, steered the narrative, driving it towards a triumphant resolution.
Set design was a collaborative endeavour with Elizabeth Melinek, translating our vision into reality. Brother's fabric and design samples influenced prop selection, while costume choices symbolised the businesses' transformation, transitioning from dark, moody colours to vibrant whites, signifying prosperity through unity. A split-screen approach artfully depicted the merger of two separate businesses within the promo's duration.
production
Production unfolded over three days, primarily at The Photocove studios in Manchester, with two studio rooms accommodating distinct sets for each Brother machine to emphasise that the businesses were operating separately. Day two involved filming at the Black Milk cafe in Manchester for collaborative work scenes between the two characters.
Lighting dynamics shifted to reflect changing narratives from day to night and diverse locations. Aputure 300d lighting, complemented by abundant natural light from large windows, set the stage. We used an app to track the sun’s position throughout the day, assisting us with positioning our lighting for the best results.
We created moonlit effects for nighttime scenes through window blackouts, practical lighting, and Aputure 300d lights with CTB gels. An Aputure 300d light with a CTO gel introduced additional warmth and contrast.
POST-production
Editing included seamless integration of split-screen moments, strategically interspersed to emphasise synchronicity. Graphics were introduced to immerse the audience in the characters' conversations, featuring mockup mobile phone screens displaying live social media interactions— written communication limited to emojis to cater to Brother's global audience.
Translations in French, German, Dutch, and Italian were incorporated for disclaimers and Brother branding, ensuring a broad, inclusive reach for their European market.
'Connected Creativity' underscores Brother's commitment to innovation and interconnected solutions. With thorough and thoughtful pre-production planning, precision in production, and post-production enhancements, we brought to life the message of unity, collaboration, and boundless creative possibilities.
